One of the most critical decisions in an industrial IoT project is how field data reaches the centre. LoRaWAN offers a strong balance for devices that are spread over a wide area, need to run for a long time, and for which a low data rate is enough.
How does LoRaWAN work?
End devices such as sensors and meters send data to gateways using LoRa radio technology. The gateway carries the message to the server over an IP network; the application layer then turns that data into meaningful measurements and events.
Thanks to the star topology, end devices do not have to stay bound to a single gateway. The same message can be received by more than one gateway within coverage.
The right use cases
LoRaWAN is not the answer to every wireless need. It is designed for small telemetry packets, alarms and infrequent commands rather than video or sustained high bandwidth.

Before you start the project
Coverage survey, message frequency, antenna placement, regional frequency plan and data security should be assessed together. A good pilot measures not only that communication works, but that the operation genuinely produces value.
