How to design an industrial energy monitoring project

A roadmap for energy monitoring, from meter selection to the Modbus data map, from the LoRaWAN link to dashboards that mean something.

Energy monitoring is far more than putting a few charts on a screen. The right measurement point, a reliable data path and indicators teams can act on have to be designed together.

Start the measurement plan from the business goal

First decide which decision you are trying to improve: reducing peak demand, deriving cost per line, seeing idle consumption, or watching for changes before a fault. Measurement points should be chosen against that question.

Simplify field communications

Most existing energy analysers offer Modbus RTU. With a proper site survey, a converter such as the LR-RS can carry that data onto a LoRaWAN network without creating a new cable route.

  • Verify the register map and scaling factors
  • Separate sampling frequency from reporting frequency
  • Define behaviour on link loss and missing data
  • Run a data quality check after commissioning

From chart to action

Dashboards should show context — shift, line, production unit — alongside total consumption. Thresholds alone are not enough; the owner of an alarm and the step to follow must be defined up front.
